Entertaining Mr. Sloane
1992, silkscreen poster

This poster is embarrassing. It is an illustration of the dangers of indescriminate lifting of an existing visual language; in this case, the work of Barbara Kruger.

It was created very early on in this series and it is such a train wreck that I have over the years, kept it hidden away in the flat file. At the time, I remember justifying the poster by calling it a ‘homage,’ and that it ‘referenced’ Ms. Kruger’s work. I have included it here because this poster taught me a lot about what not to do in reference to issues of plagiarism vs. influence.

In retrospect, I will say simply that this sort of thing shouldn’t happen. Joe Orton’s uncomfortable, funny and original play deserves better.
