I met the photographer, Michael Northrup in Baltimore in 1993. It wasn’t soon after that that he shared with me a series of photographs that he shot in the 70’s and 80’s, an idiosyncratic collection of images from Michael’s personal life: pictures of his wife, his friends, and thousands of tiny moments all shot through Michael’s odd, beautiful and unique sensibility. We immediately started talking about a book.
It took ten years to make it happen.
With the Help of Jason Fulford, we poured over thousands of images, and designed the book which we called Beautiful Ecstasy.It was published by J+L Books In 2003.
This is one of the most rewarding projects I have ever done.
My regret?
This book that I slaved over, fretted about, and imagined for 10 years contains a not-so-tiny, easy-to-find typographic oversight: A forgotten ligature.
